A self-driving car, sometimes referred to as an autonomous car, driverless car, robotic car, or robo-car, is a ground vehicle that can sense its environment and move safely with little to no human input. Self-driving cars use a combination of sensors to understand their environment, including radar, lidar, sonar, thermographic cameras, GPS, odometry, and inertial measurement units. Modern control systems analyse sensory data to determine the best routes to go, as well as impediments and pertinent signs. They are expected to have a significant influence on the automotive sector, as well as the health, welfare, urban planning, traffic, insurance, labour market, and other industries as future technologies.
According to an SAE International system,[11] there are typically six levels of autonomy in automobiles (SAE J3016, revised periodically). [12] Level 0 is the lowest level of automation, Level 1 is hands-on/shared control, Level 2 is hands-off, Level 3 is eyes-off, Level 4 is mind-off, and Level 5 is steering wheel optional. These levels may be loosely understood.
Vehicles running at Level 3 and beyond continue to make up a small percentage of the market as of March 2022. In a region of Phoenix, Arizona, Waymo became the first service provider to provide driverless taxi trips to the general public in December 2020. Honda was the first company to provide a Level 3 vehicle that was officially recognised in March 2021.
