The founding premise of the Zachry Leadership Program is that technical knowledge alone is insufficient to equip engineering graduates to make the highest impact contributions to society. To maximize their potential requires holistic development, a broader and deeper level of personal awareness, enhanced leadership skills, a better understanding of successful organizations, and a personal commitment to service. The program focuses on helping students expand their perspectives and gain appreciation for the power of collaboration and diversity of thinking. An additional, and critical, aspect of the program is that it cultivates a culture of selfless service. During their participation in the program, students will have opportunities to create peer relationships, as well as interact with accomplished professionals and other individuals with remarkable backgrounds. They will be exposed to the arts to stimulate their creativity and open their minds to new perspectives. They will emerge from the experience with a strong understanding of capitalism and how businesses operate within a free enterprise system, strengthened leadership capabilities and a sense of self-confidence in their ability to influence people, and an appreciation for how individuals and organizations can make meaningful contributions to meeting society’s needs. The combination of traditional coursework, exposure to diverse thought-leaders, and engaging experiences will develop the students’ capabilities and insights necessary to build a strong foundation for successful and rewarding careers… and lives. The Zachry Leadership Program was founded in the College of Engineering at Texas A&M University in 2016 and is possible because of the ongoing partnership with and support from Zachry Group.
