2015年10月18日，广东省人民政府与清华大学签署共建清华珠三角研究院协议，标志着研究院正式成立。研究院是省校共建的事业单位，按企业化方式运行管理，实行理事会领导下的院长负责制。
研究院恪守清华“自强不息，厚德载物”的校训，深度参与国家创新驱动发展战略的实施，推动广东产业结构转型升级、战略新兴产业培育发展，助力清华世界一流大学建设。立足广州、服务广东、辐射港澳，大力开展技术创新，培养聚集高端人才，发展高新技术产业。
研究院致力于建设成为粤港澳大湾区重要的国际技术创新基地和国内融合源头创新资源的新型研发机构引领者，形成产学研深度融合的国际化创新孵化集群，打造创新创业人才汇聚的高地，战略新兴产业和未来产业聚集的基地。
