Hey, I'm Ramdas, and I'm a software engineer and a business owner.
Over the years that I worked at a 9-5 job, I always dreamed about having my own business. After years of waiting around - One day, I took a leap of faith and bought a domain. And then I started building up my business plan with my brother and a couple of friends. That's when I found out that running a business is HARD. Even a small business comes with a lot of complexities. But together - me, my brother and our friends fought through the chaos and eventually decided that we are ready to do a soft launch. It was a Facebook ad where we'd try to sell our first 100 units of our product. We started the ad campaign and waited for our first customer. Within a couple of hours, we had our first message enquiry. A little bit of excitement, but no sale. After a day, we managed to make a sale. And we ended up with just 3 sales from the whole week's ad campaign. But this was a huge learning point because now we know that we CAN'T WIN JUST WITH PAID ADVERTISEMENT.
But what could we have done better?!
I pondered this question and went down a rabbit hole of research on how to make online sales. After a while, I realized I was asking the wrong question. The more I noticed others doing it, it made sense more and more. When you're online, you should not focus on completing sales. Instead, focus on these 4 things:
- Understand and solve a niche problem
- Grab the attention of people struggling with this problem
- Build a community of these people who trusts you and your products
- Ask your community to buy your product
