The Applied Biosciences (ABS) Graduate Interdisciplinary Program leads to a Professional Sciences Master’s degree, and prepares students to competitively enter the scientific workforce. It offers a strong understanding of the applications of the biological sciences to real world problems, including those faced by public institutions and private industry. ABS provides an unparalleled flexibility for students to choose the science and business classes that prepare them for their chosen profession. The curriculum includes foundational and practical training in various areas of applied biosciences, along with a professional component that includes internships and "cross-training" in workplace skills, such as business, research and regulatory affairs. The program also offers a high degree of flexibility to its students to balance their academic work with part-time or even full-time employment. ABS is organized into four semi-independent “tracks” to prepare students for professional careers. The Diagnostic Laboratory Sciences track focuses on the medical and biotechnology diagnostic industries surrounding in vitro devices (medical devices and diagnostic laboratory test methods). The Molecular and Cellular Biology track emphasizes cancer biology, neurobiology, heart development and disease, evolutionary biology, cell signaling, gene expression, genetic networks and systems biology. The Industrial Microbial Biotechnology track concentrates on the biotechnology industries where microorganisms are used as either tools for manufacturing chemical or biological products, or as environmental or agricultural agents. The Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) track integrates science and engineering-based approaches to provide highly controlled environments for plant productivity while optimizing resources including water, energy, space, capital and labor.
