When we started Abuelas Arepas, we had a clear mission: We would
strive to share our love for Venezuelan culture and delicious cuisine
with everyone. Just like our dear Abuela had for many years, we know
that good food makes good memories and we want to use our kitchen
to bring people together. That's why our mission statement is “To
preserve our cultura through our comida”. Though many people may be
far from home or away from loved ones, we want our food to bridge the
gap in their hearts and be a reminder that their heritage is always with
them.
Our landmark product is the Original Dulce Arepa Mix. This is an
original recipe based on the one my grandmother passed on to me, the
same one that had been passed down to her as a little girl. In our strive
to recreate the authentic Abuela experience, we use all natural, gluten
free and locally sourced ingredients because we believe in great flavor,
not filler. Our mix comes in a convenient resealable package, so storing
it is a breeze and there are no pantry messes.
This bag of premixed ingredientes, when mixed with water, creates a
deliciously sweet arepa dough that can be formed into a Dulce Arepa
and then baked, fried or Air Fried.
But what exactly is an “Arepa”? My grandmother would laugh and say
“they’re anything you dream them to be” and although the short
answer would be a fried or baked Cornmeal patty, our dear abuela
wasn’t that far off the mark because, just as in life, it’s what's on the
inside that really makes something special. An arepa can be filled with
anything ranging from the more commonplace, ham and white cheese
or shredded beef to the more exotic “Reina Pepiada” whose sublime
mix of avocado, cilantro, mayonnaise and chicken is known the world
round. It can be hearty, it can be healthy, it can be anything you want
and we would love for you to share your culinary creations with us!
