جاء إنشاء صندوق أبوظبي للتقاعد في عام 2000، بموجب القانون رقم (2) لسنة 2000 بشأن معاشات و مكافآت التقاعد المدنية لإمارة أبوظبي بالاضافة الى المتقاعدين العسكريين . ثمرة لتطلعات حكومة أبوظبي للارتقاء بمستوى الحياة الاجتماعية للمواطنين وتأمين مستقبلهم من خلال توفير نظام تقاعدي شامل يقوم على إدارة الاشتراكات والمعاشات ونهاية الخدمة للمواطنين العاملين في القطاع الحكومي والخاص في الإمارة.
تبدأ رحلة المتعامل بتسجيله في صندوق أبوظبي للتقاعد فور التحاقه بأول جهة عمل، ومن ثم يبدأ الصندوق باستقطاع نسبة من راتبه الشهري ومن ثم القيام باستثمارها وبناء أصول مستقبلية لتحقيق الاستدامة لنظام التقاعد ، وعند بلوغ المؤمن عليه لسن التقاعد يبدأ النظام بصرف معاش تقاعدي له بناء على نسبة يحددها القانون . وبعد وفاة المتقاعد لا تنقطع علاقتنا بأسرته، بل أن الصندوق يستمر في صرف المعاش التقاعدي للمستحقين من الورثة بما يضمن لهم دخل شهري ملائم بعد وفاة معيلهم.
