In the Water and Society Technical Committee, we study how human-water systems influence and are influenced by natural systems. While our research has traditionally focused on the technical aspects of advanced water management practices, we have recently recognized that effective engagement with stakeholders at various levels is crucial for facilitating better water-related decision-making. Consequently, we have shifted our research focus toward addressing the following three emerging scientific questions:
1. How can we better characterize human activities and integrate them into process-based water modeling at different spatial scales?
This question aims to address the quantification of human activities (including implicit changes, such as return flow) and their integration into the evaluation and modeling of water resources and water-related disasters. The spatial scale can range from global-scale land surface hydrologic models to urban- or city-scale water infrastructure models. The utilization of qualitative data from social sciences, such as interviews or focus group discussions, is a notable consideration.
2. How can we better communicate scientific results to the general public and inform policymaking?
This question highlights the fundamental purpose of scientific research: improving societal well-being. In the Water and Society field, key aspects include addressing the potential for future disasters, the uncertainties of hydro-climatic forecasts, and the commercial success of scientific endeavors. Members have also emphasized the importance of the AGU’s role in supporting these efforts.
3. What is the appropriate institutional structure to facilitate water governance and management?
This question explores the social, political, and legal dimensions of water governance, focusing on issues such as sectoral water rights transfers, the diffusion and adoption of new technologies, and the coordination of trade-offs at both institutional and individual levels.
