Formed in 2000 as a "full service" media house, I shuttered the doors on Aithene Multimedia for awhile in 2006, after going to work full time for ESPN.
However, even ten years later, requests for website work kept coming to me.
Mostly, I said no, because I knew that while I was fully capable of setting up their websites and taking their money, that eventually it would all come undone. I'd seen it too many times; even the couple of the odd times when I foolishly said "yes". The reason is that websites need to be maintained and supported, or they grow digital cobwebs and fall apart. Since I wasn't in a position to maintain their websites for them, I said no. I had no infrastructure or processes in place to do this sort of work.
So instead, I would take the time to listen and then give each client the same type of advice I would have given friends and family (often they were) on what they probably needed for a site, what they should expect to pay, and how to keep unexpected costs from creeping up on them, and they'd say, "Great! Who does that?" A question to which I honestly had no answer.
Most web designers will get you up and running and then pretty much leave you on your own until something breaks and you call back for help. Of course, at this point your website is down and now you're paying hourly to fix a problem that could have been prevented in the first place.
On the other hand, plenty of web shops who do handle maintenance built-in charge an arm and a leg for it. Certainly more than many small businesses can reasonably afford.
Either way, telling folks to go elsewhere was an poor solution.
So, in early 2015 I built out the foundation for my own WordPress website business. All it does is set up WordPress websites running the Genesis Framework and StudioPress themes. I host and maintain the website's backend and provide support when needed. And since the whole thing is built on WordPress, my clients are able to maintain their own content.
