Balangay Community Consulting was founded by JP Graulty in 2025 to house his independent consulting work. JP brings over a decade of experience in community engagement and centering community voices in Northeast Ohio. Balangay comes from JP's Filipino heritage, and is a type of boat used by the indigenous Austronesian people to navigate and settle islands in the Pacific like the Philippines from 3000-1500 BCE, thousands of years before Europeans had sailing technology that could cross oceans. Because of this heritage, the Philippines is known as one of the most friendly, hospitable, and community-oriented places on the planet. Our sense of shared community comes from the history of the Austronesians. After all, if you're navigating the Pacific Ocean, your survival is literally dependent on every person in your boat being cared for, and contributing their gifts and talents to the community. This concept is at the heart of our work at Balangay Community Consulting. Our communities are not made of individuals on their own journeys that have little to no impact on each other. Rather, our communities are like Balangay boats. Every person has a place, deserves love, care, and support, and has something crucial to contribute to a thriving and successful voyage.
