In 1990, former Australian PGA players Steve Bann and Dale Lynch – The No. 1 Golf Coaching Team in the World – were selected by the Australian government to develop junior golf in the state of Victoria. The duo formed the golf division of the Victorian Institute of Sport (VIS) in Melbourne, and thus created the first non-Olympic sport to become a part of the nation’s Olympic program. Within two years, the program became quickly recognized worldwide, due to Bann & Lynch’s integration of the “Olympic style”-training approach to the golf game. As the VIS program grew and became successful in Australia, its junior players began competing against top talent around the world. Shortly thereafter, Bann & Lynch stepped down from full-time coaching at the institute to focus on the coaching their former juniors, who turned professional. Some of the most recognizable players in the program were 2006 U.S. Open champion Geoff Ogilvy, nine-time PGA Tour winner Stuart Appleby and two-time Australian Open champion Aaron Baddeley. Along with long-time students Appleby, Baddeley and Ogilvy, Bann and Lynch currently serve as coaches to K.J. Choi, Matthew Goggin, Jennifer Johnson, Nick Flanagan, Steve Allan, Hee Young Park and many other professional and non-professional golfers.
