Het Bataafsch Genootschap der Proefondervindelijke Wijsbegeerte (=experimentele wetenschap) is één van de oudste wetenschappelijke genootschappen van ons land. Opgericht in Rotterdam in 1769 door Steven Hoogendijk, een rijke klokkenmaker in Rotterdam. Dit naar het voorbeeld van de Accademia dei Lincei (1603-1651) en de Royal Society (1660-heden). In de eerste anderhalve eeuw van haar bestaan werden vooral verschillende vormen van technische innovatie bevorderd. In de afgelopen eeuw kwam de nadruk te liggen op zowel de geneeskunde als de techniek.
Het Genootschap organiseert jaarlijks in Rotterdam een zestal lezingen voor haar leden, over innovatieve onderwerpen in de geneeskunde, de techniek, of de medische techniek.
