Advanced Placement and Prior Learning (APPL) is part of the BCIT Human Capital Initiative within the BCIT SITE Centre of Excellence. The goal of this initiative is to bridge the gaps between workplace experience and the post-secondary system in BC, thereby serving The Institute’s provincial mandate to build economic capacity for British Columbia. Our objective is twofold: 1. To recognize and allow transferability of education across a wide range of disciplines. It is frequently recognized that multi-discipline education produces more effective and productive graduates. 2. To recognize and measure non-traditional training and experience, thereby facilitating advanced placement and credits within the post-secondary system in British Columbia. The traditional approach for prior learning assessment review (PLAR) is to identify post-secondary equivalencies on a course-by-course basis. APPL is an outcome based approach that looks at an individual's training and experience as a block and compares it to the outcomes expected of an individual who has a certificate, diploma or degree. APPL identifies what level of post-secondary a person may be equivalent to due to training and experience. We then identify the opportunities for advanced placement in a post-secondary program. We are currently partnered with the BC/Yukon Legion, Fire Departments across the Lower Mainland, the BC Ambulance Service, and McDonald's Canada. We have specialized APPL programs for those who have served in the Armed Forces, have experience as a first responder or have supervisory or management training with McDonald's Canada. Additionally, we assess mature students from a broad range of backgrounds to allow advanced placement into business programs.
