Die Geschichte der Bergdorf-Europameisterschaft nimmt ihren Anfang im malerischen Bergdorf Gspon oberhalb Staldenried auf 1‘893 m ü. M. (Wallis/Schweiz) in der heutigen Ottmar Hitzfeld GsponArena. Diese wurde von der Trainer-Legende Ottmar Hitzfeld persönlich mit einem ersten erfolgreichen Torschuss eingeweiht.
Bergdorf-Meisterschaft – die etwas andere Fussballmeisterschaft
1984 startete die Bergdorf-Meisterschaft (= inzwischen freies Mitglied des Schweizerischen Fussballverbandes SFV). In dieser besonderen Meisterschaft spielen Teams auf etwas kleineren und der Natur angepassten Feldern und mit besonderen Regeln (sieben Feldspieler und ein Torhüter, keine Abseits- oder Rückpassregel).
Der Bergfussball machte immer wieder wegen der vielen Ballverluste von sich reden. Diese Randgeschichte erhielt vermehrt mediale Beachtung. Der immer wieder eintreffende Ballnotstand wurde später
in eine Tugend umgewandelt – mit sogenannten Ball-Spenden konnten Firmen und Privatpersonen wertvolle Unterstützung leisten. Daraus entstand schliesslich das etablierte soziale Programm «SportMeetsCharity». Mit den Spenden werden regelmässig Bergprojekte und benachteiligte Kinder, Familien und Institutionen sowie junge NachwuchssportlerInnen unterstützt
(siehe soziale Verantwortung, SportMeetsCharity).
