Der Bezirk March ist in seiner heutigen Gestalt das Ergebnis der Landsgemeinde von 1848, an der die Kantonsverfassung angenommen wurde. Der Bezirk March besteht aus den neun Gemeinden Altendorf, Lachen, Galgenen, Innerthal, Vorderthal, Wangen, Tuggen, Reichenburg und Schübelbach. Das Dorf Buttikon gehört zur Gemeinde Schübelbach, während Nuolen zur Gemeinde Wangen gehört. Am Dorf Siebnen haben drei Gemeinden Anteil: Galgenen, Schübelbach, Wangen. Bezirkshauptort ist Lachen.
Hauptaufgaben des Bezirkes sind die Führung der Volksschul-Oberstufe (7.-9.Klasse) und das Strassenwesen. Zudem hat er die Hoheit über die Fliessgewässer. Der Bezirk March und der Bezirk Höfe besitzen jeweils rund 44 % der Aktien der Spital Lachen AG und sind mit je einem Sitz im Verwaltungsrat vertreten. Dritter Aktionär ist die Hirslanden Gruppe, welche ebenfalls Anrecht auf einen Sitz im Verwaltungsrat hat. Daneben fällt das mobile Rettungswesen in die Zuständigkeit des Bezirks. Der Bezirk führt das Notariat, das Grundbuch- und Konkursamt sowie das Bezirksgericht, das Erbschaftsamt March und die Jugendförderung March.
