Big C Support is a start up charity dedicated to an immediate goal of piloting a program to make financial counselling available to cancer patients and their families to relieve financial stress. Founder and (voluntary) CEO Rosemary Lee has battled cancer and understands firsthand the financial stress it can cause. Rosemary was determined to find a way to help alleviate the financial burden for cancer patients after going through her own experience and hearing similar stories from so many others. Our aim is simple: Easy access to specialist advice and support for ALL cancer patients facing financial stress. We are the only charity in Australia to have this as our sole mission. Our support isn't determined by the type of cancer a person has, where they live or their age.There are far too many cancer patients that fall through the cracks because they don't fit into a category or meet certain criteria. Big C Support believe no one in Australia should be put in a position where they consider not having treatment simply due to the costs involved. Our unique solution: Give cancer patients struggling financially the advice and support provided by specialist financial counsellors. The Big C Support financial counsellors will be experts in finance and counsellors trained to deal with clients living with cancer. The services will be free, independent and confidential. Considering 1:2 people will have an experience with cancer, and the average cost of someone receiving treatment for cancer is $47,000; it's safe to say there will always be a need for this kind of support. The ultimate dream is to have Big C Support financial counsellors established in every state. We envisage Big C Support and our financial counsellors will become an essential service to bridging the gap between physical and financial recovery for cancer patients in Australia.
