BIO² is a four-year Horizon Europe project dedicated to improving organic farming by replacing contentious agricultural inputs with safe, effective, and circular alternatives.
While organic farming limits synthetic chemicals, many currently allowed substances — such as copper and sulfur-based fungicides, antiparasitic drugs, and manure-derived fertilizers — raise concerns for environmental, animal, and human health. BIO² aims to offer science-based, sustainable solutions to address these challenges.
Together with 20 partners from 8 European countries, BIO² is developing:
🔬 Encapsulated biocontrol agents based on beneficial bacteria, yeasts, and microalgae to replace copper and sulfur in crop protection.
🌱 Bio-based fertilizers from fish processing residues, algae, recycled urine, and microbes — providing tailored nutrition without pesticide residues.
🐑 Natural veterinary solutions, including microbial immunostimulants and antiparasitic bark extracts — reducing antibiotics and antiparasitic drugs in livestock.
All innovations are tested under real farming conditions across Europe and assessed for efficacy, safety, and sustainability.
The BIO² consortium includes leading research institutes, universities, SMEs, industrial partners, and farmer cooperatives — coordinated by the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR).
