The Bio4Products project will show how bio-resources can be converted into renewable alternatives to fossil-based processing streams such as bitumen, phenols and creosote. The project will demonstrate the integration of these sustainable resources into four end products: roofing material, phenolic resins, sand moulding resins, and engineered wood and natural fibre reinforced products. The Bio4Products project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 723070. Innovative biomass conversion Bio4Products will demonstrate an innovative two-step conversion method based on thermal fractionation. Treatment by fast pyrolysis will first convert the solid biomass into a bio-oil, while largely preserving the original functionalities. The next step sees the functional groups present in the bio-oil separated by fractionation, obtaining a sugar stream and a lignin stream. A fractionation demo-plant will be constructed by BTG Biomass Technology group at their facility in the Netherlands. New bio-based products Bio4Products will create renewable and natural alternatives to fossil-based processing streams such as bitumen, phenols and creosote. Partners will demonstrate the integration of these sustainable resources into four end products: 1. roofing material 2. phenolic resins 3. sand moulding resins 4. engineered wood and natural fibre reinforced products The overall objective is to create four products, which, due to the replacement of fossil materials with bio-based resources, deliver a 75% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
