Een duurzaam product ontstaan uit de vraag naar een innovatie oplossing voor verwerking van overtollige kraggen en rietplagsel uit Nationaal Park Weeribben Wieden om de verlanding van het gebied tegen te gaan, zonder het milieu extra te belasten.
Een BioBlock is een volledig biobased element dat bestaat uit Kraggen (plantaardige resten) uit het veengebied. De planten resten worden vermalen en geperst en door de wind gedroogd. Op deze wijze ontstaat zo, zonder verdere toevoeging van energie voor uitharding, een duurzaam bouwblok.
De standaard afmetingen van een BioBlock zijn 250x100 x65 mm
Voor het productie proces wordt de benodigde energie (elektriciteit) verkregen uit groene stroom. Door de kraggen om te vormen tot BioBlocks voorkomt men dat deze producten op het land uitgereden worden en oxideren met de lucht. De CO2 blijft vastgelegd en er ontstaat geen onbruikbaar restafval.
BioBlocks zijn duurzaam in de productie, maar ook als product en belasten het milieu op geen enkele wijze. BioBlocks zijn na sloop recyclebaar, zelfs onder bepaalde omstandigheden biodegradeble en kunnen hergebruikt worden als grondstof voor de productie van nieuwe BioBlocks. Het Cradle to Cradle principe.
Op dit moment worden BioBlocks toegepast als geluidswallen, oeverbescherming en tuin/park inrichting. De blokken worden geplaatst achter draadstaalpanelen of meer decoratief met een blinde wandverankering.
