Das Bistum Görlitz entspricht dem Gebiet des Erzbistums Breslau, das 1945 westlich der Oder-Neiße-Grenze lag. Das südliche Drittel, das ist der nördliche Teil der Oberlausitz, gehört zum Freistaat Sachsen, die nördlichen zwei Drittel, die Niederlausitz, gehören zum Land Brandenburg. Bischofssitz ist die an der Neiße gelegene Stadt Görlitz, Wallfahrtsort das frühere Zisterzienserkloster Neuzelle an der Oder. Das Bistum umfasst eine Fläche von ca. 9.700 Quadratkilometern, was etwas unter dem Durchschnitt der deutschen Bistümer liegt. Das Land ist aber tiefe Diaspora, und nur ein kleiner Teil der Bevölkerung bekennt sich zur katholischen Kirche.
Von der Zahl der Gläubigen her ist das Bistum Görlitz das mit Abstand kleinste Bistum Deutschlands. 1945 kamen viele Vertriebene in unser Gebiet, so dass die Zahl der Gläubigen von 33.000 auf 150.000 stieg, doch seit 1950 und insbesondere seit 1990 nahm die Zahl vor allem durch Wegzug wieder ab. Heute zählt das Bistum 30.000 Gläubige.
