Black Women in Computing (BWiC) is a community created to provide support and resources focused on increasing the number of black women and other not as equally represented (underrepresented) groups in computing-related fields. BWiC is the product of the GHC2010 Women of Color luncheon themed, “Building Our Community: Moving Vision into Reality”. The group was launched in 2011 with the help of the Anita Borg Institute (ABI). The official kickoff for the BWiC online community began with the Birds of a Feather session titled “Black Women in Computing: Increasing Numbers Through Networking” at the 2011 Grace Hopper Conference. During the BWiC BoF session attendees discussed the BWiC mission and identified goals for the upcoming year. Each focus group defined action items for the areas listed below.
