A Stanford-hosted competition bringing together students from diverse backgrounds to apply big data analytics to challenges in healthcare. The datathon is a weekend-long event, kicked off with the release of the case during the opening ceremony. Students have access to mentors who will be available throughout the event, and a hacker-esque space to work collaboratively with their teams. The competition ends with final presentations, awards, and a closing ceremony. Participants use statistical analysis techniques and tools to explore the datasets provided, and use the insights to make recommendations and qualitative models for adoption by appropriate stakeholders.
Our goal is for students to apply technical skills in an interdisciplinary fashion to address a data-heavy health challenge. By increasing students’ exposure to current national health problems, we hope to not only develop awareness for this field at Stanford but also make a direct impact on public health.
Furthermore, this competition is meant to cultivate the tangible excitement centered around big data on campus, and expose students to the growing use of data analytics in healthcare decision-making and products. More than simply exposing the use of data analytics in healthcare to students, we want participants to immerse themselves and gain experience in actually working with complex and relevant datasets, and step in the shoes of current health tech/biotech companies. Specifically, participants gain valuable experience in using powerful tools such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, and other proven statistical techniques to make sense of the data and provide valuable insights.
