Zweck des Verbandes ist die Vertretung der gemeinschaftlichen Interessen der Mitglieder, unter anderem gegenüber dem Gesetzgeber, der Aufsichtsbehörde BaFin, der Deutschen Bundesbank, der Deutschen Kreditwirtschaft und den Kartenorganisationen.
Dafür wurde vor dem Hintergrund der Einführung des Zahlungsdiensteaufsichtsgesetzes (ZAG), das einen Rechtsrahmen für die Tätigkeit von Zahlungsinstituten setzte und zuletzt zum 13.01.2018 durch das Gesetz zur Umsetzung der 2.Zahlungsdiensterichtline angepasst wurde, in Frankfurt am 21. Oktober 2009 von neun Unternehmen der Bundesverband der Zahlungsinstitute (BVZI) gegründet.
In den vergangenen Jahren ist der Verband auf mittlerweile auf über 25 Mitglieder angewachsen und hat, um den gesetzlichen und tatsächlichen Entwicklungen des Paymentmarktes gerecht zu werden, in Bundesverband der Zahlungs-und E-Geld-Institute umfirmiert.
