In 2016 I began covering the video game industry within Brisbane, where I live. I named the project Brisbane Byte.
For over two years I did my research, interviewed people, wrote articles, and even hand-delivered Brisbane Byte to arcades all around South-East Queensland. I have met so many incredibly passionate people within the industry, all of which were gracious enough to welcome me with open arms, and for that I will always be thankful.
At first Brisbane Byte was nothing more than a semi-regular newsletter, but before long there was enough interest to turn it into a monthly magazine. As a solely-run side project, I have found it at times to be stressful and challenging. Above all else though, it has continuously been an incredibly rewarding experience.
Video games are a funny thing. Developers spend years and countless work-hours on a project, just so it has a chance at reaching the masses. The sad reality is so many high quality games are left by the wayside because most people focus on AAA titles alone.
That’s why I’ve started BYTE MEDIA GROUP, an amalgamation of three brands servicing the needs of local gamers and game developers:
INDIE GAMES AUSTRALIA: A growing database of independent games made right here in our own backyard. Perfect for discovering games new and old, as well as the developers who make them.
WHERE GAMERS GO: The real-world side of the industry. Where Games Go lists all kinds of events, arcades, and other gaming-related businesses across the nation. Here you can find where they’re located and what’s on offer.
BYTE MAGAZINE: Formally known as Brisbane Byte, Byte Magazine will continue the same level of coverage, only now it’s reaching out to all parts of Australia. Think of it as your monthly check-in with the local games industry.
Here’s the lofty goal. With Byte Media Group I want to do my part to unify the Australian gaming industry. That’s a big task, but with time it can happen.
