Der Berner Architekt Werner Edgar Bürgi gründete 1976 die Bürgi-Willert-Stiftung. Die Zwecke der Stiftung sind:

Die Tätigkeit der Stiftung beschränkt sich auf das Gebiet der Stadt Bern, wobei damit nicht nur die politische Gemeinde Bern, sondern auch die Wohnagglomeration Bern gemeint ist, d.h. die an die Gemeinde Bern anschliessenden Gemeinden.
Ein Stiftungsrat, der gegenwärtig fünf Mitglieder umfasst führt die Stiftung, die ihren Sitz in Bern hat. Das Domizil befindet sich an der Spitalgasse 4 in Bern.
Die Leistungen der Stiftung müssen ausschliesslich aus dem Ertrag stammen. Der Stifter hat ausdrücklich bestimmt, dass die Substanz des Vermögens erhalten bleiben soll.
Mit dem Bürgi-Willert-Preis werden jährlich Privatpersonen und Institutionen für ihre Verdienste im kulturellen oder sozialen Bereich in der Stadt Bern ausgezeichnet. Der Bürgi-Willert-Preis ist mit einer Summe von CHF 60'000 dotiert.
