The "Emissions Race" has led to overly ambitious climate targets in too short a time-frame. It's a hard balance to strike, because on the one hand, ambitious climate targets "will serve to organize and measure the best of our skills and abilities" (J.F.K.); but on the other, it encourages *bad actors* to engage in activities that might be labelled by some as, "green-washing".
Some of those activities include the purchase of "bogus offsets" - which are typically cheap offsets that come from a dubious source. But we think that companies that get accused of buying these "bogus offsets" aren't doing it on purpose.
They're buying bogus offsets because there is fundamentally a huge gap between the supply of quality offsets and the demand for it. The demand side, is primarily driven by quick succession of bandwagoning climate commitments given by individuals, corporations, governments, and supranational organizations the world over.
The supply side is much trickier, since the science surrounding negative-emissions technology is so new. However, we think we have a solution that might mitigate the risk of companies buying "Bogus/Junk Offsets" altogether.
Using First Principles thinking to establish "limits" and begin with what we know to be true, we might say that:
Premise: Bogus offsets decrease confidence in carbon credit markets as a whole.
A) In extension, this also diminishes the efforts of organizations and government agencies attempting to reach ambitious climate targets.
B) If left untreated, bogus carbon offsets could severely cripple market confidence.
Conclusion: We need a solution that will clear away the fog of war currently shrouding the carbon offsets and 3-rd party certifications industries so as to edge out cheap, bogus offsets with high-quality offsets that have transparency built into the product architecture.
