For almost 1 in 3 women with breast cancer, preoperative chemotherapy is necessary to enable breast conserving surgery. Unfortunately, this may not always be sufficient, resulting in the patient requiring more aggressive surgery including complete breast removal. The goal of CARES is to develop an optimized and more targeted manner to deliver personalized breast cancer treatment. By encapsulating chemotherapeutics within heat-sensitive particles, drug exposure to healthy tissues will be limited. An adaptive applicator will be developed to precisely heat the tumor region and subsequently trigger local drug delivery, which can be measured through real-time MR-based treatment monitoring. With the envisioned technologies, CARES will contribute towards a healthier society with improved quality of life for cancer patients.
