Angling is a totally inclusive sport that offers no barriers to those wishing to participate, and an immediate reward to those who take part. Going fishing is not only a great way to stay active and healthy but it is also a perfect activity to help calm your mind, reduce anxiety, fight off depression and promote relaxation.
Following the Covid pandemic the numbers of people with signs of mental health and other wellbeing related issues increased considerably. No section of the population was exempt. This has put an added pressure on organisations and support services.
Our programmes are aimed at children, young people and adults whether this in terms of support with mental health and wellbeing issues, or supporting those who live with long term health issues or are vulnerable to social isolation.
We work in partnership with organisations, schools, youth centres, local NHS trusts and the community, to offer a programme of activities that will meet the five steps to wellbeing, identified by the NHS. These steps are;
Connect with other people - The development of good relationships are important for mental wellbeing as they can build a sense of belonging and give an opportunity to share positive experiences. Connecting with others will also provide support and enable the giving of support to others.
Be physically active – As an outdoor sport angling contributes to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Although sedentary activity it benefits both physical and mental health.
Learn new skills – Angling can contribute to personal and social development. Whether learning new skills, or building knowledge to support current, it helps to build a sense of purpose, boost self confidence and raise self esteem
Give to others - angling engages participants in community activities and can lead on to other activities such as volunteering.
Take notice - being mindful of the surroundings helps participants recognise their thoughts and feelings.
