Founded in 1971 by Derek Wright and Jim Sullivan, the Calgary Canadian Irish Athletic Club (CCIAC), or the “Irish,” is a premier outdoor athletic club in Calgary. Rooted in Irish heritage yet welcoming members of all backgrounds, the club has been a cornerstone of Calgary’s sporting community for over five decades. From its inception, the Irish have embraced a vision to promote amateur sports and foster camaraderie, good citizenship, and personal growth. Today, the club proudly supports a range of teams, including Senior Men’s and Women’s rugby, Junior rugby (U7 to U17), and Ladies’ field hockey. Notably, the club established its own clubhouse and playing fields in 1993, complete with two rugby pitches and two field hockey pitches. Signature events include the Alberta High School Icebreaker Tournament, the St. Patrick’s Day Touch Rugby, and the Merv Popadynec Memorial Match. The Irish have a rich history of success, with many members representing Canada in international competitions, including World Cups for both Men’s and Women’s rugby. Known globally for our hospitality, we have toured internationally and hosted teams from across the world.
