Chiptuning is het aanpassen van de motorsoftware voor verbetering van de prestaties. Elke auto is vanuit de fabriek uitgerust met standaard motorsoftware. Deze motorsoftware is door de fabrikant ver binnen de maximale belasting van de motor ontwikkeld. Bij Chiptuning worden de parameters van de motorsoftware met idealere waardes opnieuw afgestemd, oftewel de motorsoftware wordt geoptimaliseerd. Onder andere de mappen van de brandstofdruk, brandstof/luchtverhouding, gaspedaalinjectie en de turbo worden aangepast. De aangepaste parameters blijven uiteraard binnen de door de fabrikant opgegeven grenswaardes.
Door middel van optimalisatie van de motorsoftware is bij turbomotoren een vermogenswinst realiseerbaar van 20% tot 40%. Dit uit zich in een duidelijk merkbare koppeltoename (trekkracht) en een verhoging van de topsnelheid en lager verbruik. Bij atmosferische motoren is de vermogenswinst wat lager, ongeveer 10%. Ook zal de motor na optimalisatie een stuk soepeler lopen en zuiniger en beter op gaspedaalbewegingen reageren.
