Tout a commencé dans la province de Tamatave au début des années 40 avec un couple réunionnais, les « Robert ». Après leur installation, ils décidèrent de fonder une petite chocolaterie artisanale. C’est ainsi que fut créée la chocolaterie Robert.Vers 1948, les Robert ont cédé la chocolaterie à un colon français qui a décidé d’implanter la petite unité avec sa confiserie de sucre, déjà installée à Antananarivo, la capitale de Madagascar.
Après l’indépendance malgache et le début de la nationalisation de l’économie, les colons français durent quitter petit à petit la Grande île. C’est en 1977 que la famille Berger, dernier colon propriétaire, céda la chocolaterie Robert à la famille Ramanandraibe, une des premières familles malgaches qui ont contribué activement à la relance économique et industrielle de Madagascar durant la période postcoloniale. Désormais, elle fait partie du groupe Ramanandraibe, composé d’une douzaine de sociétés.
