Christian Literacy Project is a not-for-profit ministry still in the organizational phase. Many prisons in the U.S. don’t have enough Bibles in the chapel to give one to every inmate who wants one. Fewer still have enough easy-to-read Bibles for low-level readers in their population. The calling of Christian Literacy Project and our primary mission is to provide easy-to-read Bibles to inmates and chaplains at no charge. - ---- From Augustine of Hippo to George Muller, most timeless Christian classics are out of reach of low-level readers. It is the goal of Christian Literacy Project Online to translate these classics for low-level readers and make them available for no charge to inmates, chaplains, or the public, (pdf downloads) ---- While 79% of the U.S. population is literate, according to some surveys, nearly 75% of the prison population are low-level readers (depending on the survey, between 52% and 75% of the incarcerated read at low levels). One of the missions of Christian Literacy Project is to disseminate these facts. ---- The end of the 20th Century brought much change to US Prison systems. Generally, though, the trend was to replace punishment, isolation, and Bible study with vocational training, continuing education, and medical-psychological treatments. The Bible, it seems, was set aside. This begs the question, “What role can the Bible play in rehabilitation of offenders in the U.S. prison systems today? Reports by groups like Prison Fellowship, Baylor University, and even Corrections Today, demonstrate that inmates involved in faith-based prison initiatives are less likely to go back behind bars after release.
