In het programma CIRCUROAD werken bedrijven, overheden en kennisinstellingen samen aan circulair, biobased asfalt. We vervangen bitumen, het fossiele bindmiddel in asfalt, door hernieuwbare grondstoffen. Het consortium, met Rijkswaterstaat als host, identificeert de beste technologie, zorgt voor een grondige validatie en stimuleert de marktintroductie van duurzaam asfalt. Zo verlagen we de CO2-uitstoot en minimaliseren we de afhankelijkheid van fossiele bronnen.
Vanaf eind 2023 is Rijkswaterstaat de host van het CIRCUROAD-programma. CIRCUROAD past binnen het Transitiepad Wegverharding. Het doel van Rijkswaterstaat is om voor 2030 een klimaatneutrale en circulaire infrastructuur te hebben, waarbij materialen hoogwaardig worden hergebruikt.
Circulair asfalt vraagt enerzijds om hergebruik en anderzijds om een alternatief voor het huidige fossiele bindmiddel, bitumen. De vervanging van bitumen door een biobased en/of circulair bindmiddel vergt innovatieve technologieën waar CIRCUROAD-deelnemers hard aan werken. Zo zijn er proefvakken met verschillende samenstellingen en uit berekeningen blijkt dat een CO2 reductie van 75% mogelijk is. Alleen al in Nederland ligt 136.000 kilometer asfalt, dus het potentieel van deze innovatie is enorm.
