Growing up, I had the opportunity to work on my Grandpa's Cherry farm. My favorite memories are picking cherries alongside my cousins, brothers, parents and grandparents. As my Grandpa entered his 80's, it became difficult for him to prune, cultivate, and manage the land. This is where a fellow farmer, Tim Tubs, came in to help Grandpa. Tim managed the orchard and coordinated the harvesting and sold the Cherry's to a local store. In exchange, my Grandpa received a small percentage of the revenue, which helped grandpa pay the taxes on the land. While it's in no way a way to get rich quick, owning the land, and leasing it to Tim, allowed my Grandpa to pass on this Legacy to the next generation of Farmer. I look forward to taking my children Cherry picking, thanks to the connection that my Grandpa had with his community, who in turn were able to help manage the land.
On the other side of the country, in the Ramona Valley, my parents, Joanne and Ken, and I, were driving past Jack Wards property, where my father shared the Jack hires someone to manage and harvest the grapes, growing on his land. Since the Ramona Valley is known for being ideal for Vineyards, and my parents have an acre of flat land, ready for planting, this led to us discussing what to do with my parents property. We talked about finding someone who we trusted to cultivate the land, however there was a problem. My parents didn't have a neighbor, like my Grandpa did, who was willing to manage the land. This need led me to the idea of a website where locals could sign up to lease land that is going unused.
The second part of the idea, to create a subscription-based CSA type box, came from having excess pomegranates on my parents land. I know many people who have a lemon tree that produces an excess of fruit and they don't know what to do with them. Having a way to sell the produce is a great way for the little guy to make some extra cash on the side.
