Community Best, United With Tech! Mission: To empower and enable the Tech Community to give back to the broader community of Redwood City. In 1867, Redwood City was the first city in San Mateo County to incorporate. This beautiful city has a lot of history and long-standing traditions, and like all of Silicon Valley, there is also rapid change and constant innovation. While the change and innovation can be positive for many in the community, it can also cause unexpected and unintended ripples throughout the community. Redwood City School District was forced to close 4 schools and their district office because declining enrollment has led to a $10M budget deficit over the next 3 years. In our meeting with School Board President Dennis McBride and Vice President Janet Lawson, they explained that RCSD enrollment has declined by about 2,000 students in the last 5 years. As property prices rise, many long-standing families move out and those moving in may not have kids yet or may decide to send their children to private schools. Children are our future, and the schools need our support. So does the city of Redwood City, which narrowly avoided cutting critical services by passing a half cent sales tax increase on the November 2018 ballot. RCSD and the city are the two institutions designed to care for and support the entire community of Redwood City and now they need our support. Community Best is a lean team of parents/ engineers/ community advocates/ entrepreneurs and our goal is to empower the tech community to give back to the broader community. We are a lean team of 4 (for now, and could use your help!) with lofty ambitions. We will learn, experiment, hustle, and hopefully succeed in our goal of building a stronger united community. To start, we have been busy working with RCSD to understand how we can make the biggest positive impact on our schools and our kids.
