Elektrolytisch verzinken is een (galvanisch) procédé waarbij een dun, maar sterk laagje zink via elektrolyse wordt aangebracht op –bijvoorbeeld- ijzeren buizen, stalen bouten of andere metalen voorwerpen. Deze elektrolyse vindt plaats in een of meer speciale chemische baden (waar de wat grotere materialen in komen te hangen) en in ‘trommels’ (voor alles wat kleiner is). Het procédé wordt om verschillende redenen toegepast: onder andere om de betreffende materialen harder te maken, beter te laten geleiden of klaar te maken voor een volgend bewerkingsproces, maar vooral om ze te beschermen tegen corrosie en zodoende roestvorming te voorkomen. Tegelijkertijd kiest men ook steeds vaker voor deze specifieke elektrolytische oppervlaktebehandeling omwille van de mooie, ‘glanzend strakke’ uitstraling die het zink zo krijgt.
Passiveren is een procedé waarbij we elektrolytisch verzinkt staal voorzien van een specifieke beschermlaag (blank/blauw, geel of zwart passiveren). Deze behandelingen met uiteenlopende chemische oplossingen kunnen om verschillende redenen nodig zijn, bijvoorbeeld om ervoor te zorgen dat het betreffende voorwerp of materiaal:
•Extra goed wordt beschermd tegen corrosie
•Veel krasbestendiger en harder wordt
•Een poedercoat- of lakbehandelingen kan ondergaan
•Beter geleidende eigenschappen krijgt
