Originating with founder Jack’s work in the world of adult care, he noticed when working with the learning disabled that limited activities often left attendees feeling isolated and frustrated. Recognising the impact music had on improving engagement and emotional well-being, Jack began introducing accessible music-making sessions tailored to the unique needs and abilities of the attendees.
This approach revealed extraordinary talent and creativity among the group. Participants used music as a tool for communication, emotional processing, and self-expression. With modern music technology lowering the barriers of traditional instruments, the attendees created original works that reflected their lives and perspectives.
The therapeutic outcomes of the process—together with the release of the disabled artist’s songs on major streaming platforms—demonstrated the personal value of “outsider music,” a term used for self-taught, unconventional approaches to music-making. Daylight Studio was officially registered as a charity in 2023.
Later in 2023 Daylight Studio partnered with Cripplegate Foundation and Islington Giving to train two neuro-divergent Trustees. They have both since joined as full time members.
