Die Deutsche Botschaftsschule Teheran steht in einer langen Tradition deutscher Schulen in Teheran. Ein Kulturabkommen zwischen Deutschland und dem Iran führte 1907 zur Gründung der ersten deutschen Schule in Teheran.Sie wurde von der Deutschen Reichsregierung und von der persischen Regierung subventioniert und war gut ausgestattet. 1925 wurde eine deutsch-persische Berufsschule gegründet, im Jahr 1932 eröffnete die deutsche Kolonie eine Schule für deutschsprachige Kinder. Nach den erzwungenen Schließungen im 2. Weltkrieg wurde 1955 wieder eine deutsche Schule, die DST, in Teheran eröffnet. Sie zählte im Jahr 1976 fast 2.000 Kinder, die dort seit 1964 das deutsche Abitur ablegen konnten. Wie alle internationalen Schulen musste auch die DST nach der Islamischen Revolution im Frühjahr 1980 schließen. Für die im Land verbliebenen deutschsprachigen Kinder und viele Diplomatenkinder wurde schon im September 1980 die Deutsche Botschaftsschule Teheran (DBST) gegründet. Seit 1994 werden die Schüler, ebenso wie die im selben Jahr zugelassenen Kinder aus deutsch-iranischen Ehen, auf dem Gelände der Britischen Residenz im Stadtteil Gholak beschult. Dieser Standort liegt im wohlhabenden Norden Teherans, dem bevorzugten Wohngebiet der Klientel der
DBST, und ist derzeit gut mit Auto, aber auch öffentlichen Verkehrs -mitteln (U-Bahn in unmittelbarer Nähe) erreichbar. Seit dem 01.02.2012 hat der internationale Zweig der DBST offiziellen Status. Insgesamt werden somit 200 Schülerinnen und Schüler aus 45 Nationen unter der Verantwortung der DBST beschult.
Vom 20. bis 27. April 2012 besuchte eine zweiköpfige Bund-Länder-Inspektion des Hessischen Kultusministeriums und der Zentralstelle für das Auslandsschulwesen die Deutsche Botschaftsschule Teheran. Die Schule schnitt in allen Bereichen gut bis sehr gut ab und darf sich nun zurecht als exzellente Auslandsschule bezeichnen.
