Founded on September 14, 2016, the East Boston Community Soup Kitchen (EBCSK) was created by Sandra Nijjar, an El Salvadorian immigrant driven by a strong sense of community and compassion. After losing her job, Sandra envisioned a place where marginalized individuals could receive nutritious meals and essential services in an atmosphere of dignity and respect. Within just three months, the soup kitchen was operational, hosted by Our Saviour Lutheran Church.
Initially, EBCSK served as a traditional soup kitchen, becoming an integral part of the East Boston community. However, the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 prompted us to shift to a food pantry model. This change allowed us to better serve a growing number of individuals and families facing food insecurity due to the pandemic and economic instability. Today, we support over 600 people weekly, including the homeless, families, teens, seniors, those with disabilities, and at-risk youth.
Our success is built on collaborations with community partners like Channel Fish, YMCA, Eastie Farm, Loving Spoonful, Gaining Ground, Tesoro Market, Food for Free, and Shaw’s. These partnerships enable us to assemble and distribute food bags each Monday. Additionally, we provide ready-to-eat hot meals every Tuesday afternoon through partnerships with local eateries, ensuring even those without cooking facilities can enjoy a nutritious meal.
Beyond food distribution, EBCSK offers warm clothing, personal hygiene items, hot shower vouchers, housing aid, and addiction recovery programs. Despite the increased demand due to rising food costs and economic pressures, our commitment to providing essential sustenance and comprehensive support remains steadfast.
Fueled by our mission and inspired by the resilience of our community, EBCSK continues to strive for a better future, providing hope and support without prejudice or bias.
