English for Heritage Language Speakers provides training in advanced English and career skills for non-native speakers of English who are interested in public service. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, have the equivalent of a bachelor's degree, be native speakers of eligible languages, and have advanced-level English skills. The program runs eight months (January through August), with six months of full-time study at the Georgetown University School of Continuing Studies (in Washington, D.C.) and two months of part-time online study. All tuition is covered, and scholars receive a monthly living stipend. After completing the program, graduates must work for the federal government—in a position with national security responsibilities—for at least one year. EHLS is funded by the National Security Education Program and administered by the Center for Applied Linguistics and Georgetown University School of Continuing Studies.
