Since 2013, the Entangled Media Histories (EMHIS) network has fostered transnational dialogue on the historical dimensions of cross-border and cross-media flows, using the concept of entangled media history. EMHIS aims to challenge the traditional mono-medial and national perspectives of media history, which have predominantly focused on one media such as press, radio, or television within national contexts, subordinating cross-border and cross-medial interconnections. While international conferences and academic journals have begun to address these issues, there is still a lack of formal cross-border research collaborations.
The EMHIS network includes around 40 researchers dedicated to the study of entangled media histories. Initially funded by the Swedish foundation STINT from 2013 to 2019, EMHIS facilitated intellectual exchange between Lund University (Sweden), Bournemouth University (UK), and the Leibniz Institute for Media Research | Hans-Bredow-Institut (Germany). Over time, the network expanded to include researchers from various countries and universities, all sharing a focus on transnational and multi-media dimensions of media history.
The network provides an arena for PhD students, early-career researchers, and senior scholars to explore new methodologies in a bottom-up style while enhancing internationalization in research and teaching. EMHIS activities include research exchanges, network conferences (EMHIS Forum), online seminars, project collaborations, publications, PhD student activities, and online engagement through social media and its website, emhis.org.
The EMHIS steering committee consists of Marie Cronqvist (Linköping University, Sweden), Hans-Ulrich Wagner (Leibniz Institute for Media Research, Germany), Kristin Skoog (Bournemouth University, UK), Jamie Medhurst (University of Aberystwyth, UK), Maximilian Brockhaus (University of Vienna, Austria), and Alec Badenoch (Utrecht University/University of Amsterdam, Netherlands).
