The Philippines Project of Engineers Without Borders-Central Houston Chapter is a group of engineers who volunteer to assist the community of Tapul (Samar), Philippines with a project that has a main focus on providing improved access to healthcare and regional markets.
Tapul, a community of about 400 people, is located 45 miles northeast of Tacloban City, 500 miles southeast of Metro Manila, and 220 miles northeast of Cebu City. Several years ago a typhoon destroyed the wooden bridge that once crossed over the Ulot River alongside the community and provided ease of access to the community. Community members must now cross the river on foot, often times carrying their goods for market or children, at times when the river's water level can reach neck-high or more.
The program’s project will address the community’s need for ease of access across the Ulot River. The main project benefit is to reduce the difficulty for the community to transport agricultural products from farm gate to the nearest market. Current transportation costs for the community are expensive and the community also has difficulty responding to health emergencies.
The program intends to build a bridge for Tapul that is of 2 meters in width and approximately 25-30 meters in length. The bridge will be designed to handle pedestrian traffic, habal habal motor taxis, and motorized tricycles only.
