Epilectra is a superhero who transforms her disability, epilepsy, into a super-ability. She channels the seizure-causing electrical activity in her brain out into the world through her fingertips in the form of lightning. She uses this superpower to battle villains, fight injustice, and make the world a better place. Epilectra also creates and leads a team of superheroes called SEEZ. SEEZ superheroes are special because each of them has a different disability they’ve morphed into a superpower.
Epilectra’s human self is Eden Rivers, a 5th grade social studies teacher. Eden’s brother, Logan, is an electrical engineer. Their friend, Angel, is a wealthy, Latino gentleman. They also are involved in the founding and running of SEEZ.
Epilectra is a graphic novel, but she’s also much more. She’s a positive, empowering role model to anyone with a disability letting them know that, while their struggles are legitimate, they shouldn’t stop living productive and fulfilling lives; from chasing and achieving their dreams.
The creator and author of Epilectra, Sue Seserman, manages three invisible disabilities: epilepsy, type 1 diabetes, and hypothyroidism. She has a BA in Communications and a MS in Journalism from Northwestern University and spent the first half of her career working in public relations, the highlights of which include five years on the sports marketing team at Edelman PR in Chicago and six years as PR Director at George Lucas’s gaming arm, LucasArts Entertainment Company.
Epilectra is far and away the project about which Sue feels the most passionate.
