Mesothelioma is a dreadful terminal cancer caused by exposure to asbestos dust and fibres. The cancer usually develops in the lining that covers the outer surface of the body's vital organs. Prognosis is poor, there is NO CURRENT CURE and treatments are limited. Research and access to clinical trials are improving but desperately need funding to save lives... The UK has the highest incidence of mesothelioma in the world, with more than 5000 people diagnosed each year. Asbestos related cancer has previously been viewed as “an old man’s disease” however the numbers of cases continues to RISE. Tragically, we are now seeing this disease affecting more and more younger men and women. Mesothelioma in the chest (pleural mesothelioma) is more common than mesothelioma in the abdomen (peritoneal mesothelioma). Mesothelioma takes a long time to develop. It’s normal for people to get the first symptoms 30 to 40 years after they were first exposed to asbestos. It is also very difficult to diagnose until too late. We are a voluntary community committed to raising funds to research a cure for mesothelioma. ERASE MESO OBJECTIVES 1. Fund scientific research into mesothelioma to help find a cure or at least a way of maintaining this disease. 2. Raise awareness of mesothelioma. Despite being banned in the UK in 1999, asbestos can still be found in many homes, schools, and hospitals. Many of these buildings were built in the second half of the last century when we were at the peak of importing asbestos into the country. A recent BBC inquiry found that nine out of 10 NHS hospitals still contain asbestos. There is currently NO KNOWN CURE for mesothelioma because research is severly underfunded. Mesothelioma must end.
