Das Exilmuseum entsteht aus bürgerschaftlichem Engagement am Anhalter Bahnhof.
Im Fokus steht die Zeit 1933–1945: Von den Nationalsozialisten verfolgt, flüchtete in diesen Jahren etwa eine halbe Million Menschen ins Ausland. Es waren nicht nur, aber in der Mehrzahl Jüdinnen und Juden.
Unzähligen der Verfolgten gelang der Weg ins – hoffentlich rettende – Exil vom zentralen Anhalter Bahnhof in Berlin aus. Immer war es ein Aufbruch ins Ungewisse, der manchmal ein Leben lang von Fremdheit, Angst und Heimweh begleitet wurde.
Von den Menschen, denen dieses Schicksal widerfuhr, möchte das Exilmuseum Berlin erzählen – und dabei auch die Brücke zur Gegenwart schlagen: Wie wurden Flucht und Entwurzelung zu zentralen Erfahrungen unserer Zeit? Welche Verbindung besteht zwischen dem Exil damals und heute? Und was können wir aus der Geschichte für das Heute lernen?
