Fresh15 was founded when Keren Gilbert, MS, RDN of Decision Nutrition, and Sara Siskind, HHC health coach and chef, started to see a pattern amongst their young women clientele. They found a lack of education and support among college women on how to navigate their new routine and environment as they began independent living away from home. The phrase “Freshman 15” is a common phrase used in America to imply a weight gain as one enters their freshman year. Of course, every individual is different and the actual average number a college freshman puts on is more like 2.5 to 3.5 pounds. However, it is the “college lifestyle” that can be the beginning of a slippery slope for these young women. Keren and Sara aim to educate these young women at the ages of 17-22 on how to enter the next phase of life with invaluable lessons on not only how to eat healthy, but how to manage stress as well. The most important aspect of the program is that it is students empowering students.
