The Fair Congo Initiatives (FCI) are a woman-led for-profit social enterprise, empowering women in the production of chocolate, coffee and gold jewelry. Working with over 32,000 small holder farmers and artisanal miners FCI is the first to build a chocolate factory and is currently implementing DRC’s first responsible ASM gold jewelry initiative. FCI is the first American owned company to granted an export license for ASM gold in the country, the only company currently allowed to export ASM gold from DRC into the United States, and the first supply chain actor operating in a conflict-affected area to conform to the ‘OECD Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Supply Chains of Minerals from Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas’. The Fair Congo Foundation, the NGO division of FCI, is a non-profit based in the DRC. The Foundation manages the implementation of the ORIGINS Innovation Labs, developing value addition methods with the limited resources available to entrepreneurs operating in conflict-affected and high-risk areas. The ORIGINS Innovation Labs have developed the first chemical-free gold alloy, without the use of any mercury, or traditional refining chemicals such as cyanide, chlorine gas, nitric and hydrochloric acids. The ORIGINS Innovation Labs have also developed low-power production lines, under 5 AMPs, for both chocolate and gold jewelry.
