Traveling with a purpose. That is what Fair Trade Guides is all about. Firstly, there is a purpose in traveling. It is an opportunity to encounter new cultures, broaden your horizons and tell tales when you return from your travel. We believe this is done by meeting the local people. However, the existing setups offering local trips is often mainstreamed and does not cater unique and individual experience. The main reason is because of cost-heavy or profit-reaping models that does not include local people in the business development, thereby opening up for never seen before possibilities. Second, there is purpose in lowering unemployment. In the East African countries, unemployment is high. Thirdly, there is a purpose in helping people through university. A large part of the young have graduated or are in the process of getting a university degree. All tertiary education in East Africa is subjected to tuition fee, which means that students have to fund their degree and those that do not have the money, fails to acquire a diploma. The funding predominantly comes from loans, provided by the university or micro-finance institutions, with very high interest rates. So not only, do the students need to pay back the loan, but a substantial amount of interest. Fair Trade Guides aims to combine these purposes: Providing travelers with unique local experiences and local young people with a job and an education. The market for ethical tourism is growing, as is the number of travelers going to East Africa. University students speak English, are well educated, knows the local turf and in great need of work and affordable funding for their degree. Fair Trades Guides proposes an innovative business model for how this market gap can socially and profitable adressed.
