Focal Ottawa is an intergenerational initiative dedicated to promoting and helping local businesses. Amidst the pandemic now more than ever—through our buy-local campaign. As a team of 1 university student and 8 high-school students from Ottawa, we believe passionately in the transformative power of buying local products to strengthen individual local companies and in turn, the Ottawa economy. We are all members of Key Club—an international student-led service organization dedicated in fostering leadership and character in its members—and we share the honor of being supported by local Kiwanis clubs, as well as our two ardent advisors, Steve Georgopoulos and Jarrod Nichol. We offer businesses brand and product publicity, through our website and social media, in exchange for their sponsorship. Specifically, we require that businesses provide us a promotion code for their product(s) such that we can promote this code and in the process, receive a percentage of money of the sales made using this code. 100% of the net proceeds we receive will then be donated to Bridges Over Barriers, a fund under the Education Foundation of Ottawa designed to financially support Ottawa Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) students in need. Bridges Over Barriers enables OCDSB social workers to, through their clinical lens, identify any barriers that prevent students from accessing basic necessities and activities—that threaten their mental and physical health. The goal of Bridges Over Barriers is to then collaborate with these students and/or their families in order to provide critical support, within 24-hours. Through our initiative, we hope to not only help local businesses, but support other youth in our community who deserve every bit of the same privileges we take for granted.
