Fotostudio Smit aan de Ambachtstraat in Almelo heeft 22 november 2017 het predikaat Hofleverancier toegekend gekregen. Gedeputeerde Eddie van Hijum nam als plaatsvervangend Commissaris der Koning de honneurs waar om namens Koning Willem Alexander het predikaat te overhandigen, tijdens een receptie vanwege het 125-jarig bestaan van Foto Smit.
Daarmee was het nog niet gedaan, want burgemeester Arjen Gerritsen kwam namens de gemeente Almelo de Stadspenning overhandigen aan Willem Smit (81) de vader van de huidige directeur Guido Smit. Willem Smit realiseerde als derde generatie van het familiebedrijf de verbreding van de fotostudio van portretfotografie tot reclamefotografie voor tal van bedrijven. Genoemd in deze o.a. bedrijven als Wehkamp, Livera, Arly, Foodconnect, Vivera, Ter Stal, Madison en Totaal Bed.
Daarbij wordt de portretfotografie niet vergeten, want daarmee begon het in 1892 toen Hendrikus Arnoldus Smit begon als fotograaf en portrettekenaar voor het retoucheren van de glasplaat dat toen nog als negatief werd benut.
De huidige directeur Guido Smit studeerde het vak in Delft. In 1994 stapte hij in het bedrijf. Guido is van de digitale fotografie. Hij was de eerste in Nederland die fotografeerde met een digitale achterwand. De reclamefotografie nam daardoor een grote vlucht, want ook het grootformaat wordt in eigen studio geprint.
'Fantastisch om te doen. Van visagiste tot kapster, en styliste tot topmodellen, alles halen we in huis om onze opdrachtgevers topkwaliteit te leveren,' zegt Guido daarover maar met de aantekening dat hij nog steeds veel plezier beleeft met het maken van familiefoto's.
